Synopsis

Alongside Moctezuma and Benito Ju rez, Pancho Villa is probably the best-known figure in Mexican history. Villa legends pervade not only Mexico but the United States and beyond, existing not only in the popular mind and tradition but in ballads and movies. There are legends of Villa the Robin Hood, Villa the womanizer, and Villa as the only foreigner who has attacked the mainland of the United States since the War of 1812 and gotten away with it. Whether exaggerated or true to life, these legends have resulted in Pancho Villa the leader obscuring his revolutionary movement, and the myth in turn obscuring the leader. Based on decades of research in the archives of seven countries, this definitive study of Villa aims to separate myth from history. So much attention has focused on Villa himself that the characteristics of his movement, which is unique in Latin American history and in some ways unique among twentieth-century revolutions, have been forgotten or neglected. Villa s Divisi-n del Norte was probably the largest revolutionary army that Latin America ever produced. Moreover, this was one of the few revolutionary movements with which a U.S. administration attempted, not only to come to terms, but even to forge an alliance. In contrast to Lenin, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Fidel Castro, Villa came from the lower classes of society, had little education, and organized no political party.

There are many other Pancho Villa biographies by authors who were closer to him, like Dr. Ramón Puente who was his secretary for a time. There is the outstanding five volume work by the great writer Martin Guzmán "Memorias de Pancho Villa" that took him more than ten years to write. Friedrich Katz (1927-2010), who was a prominent anthropologist and historian with a special interest in the Mexican Revolution analyses them all, including journalist John Reed's influential articles that were not included in his book "Insurgent Mexico." The point is, that all of these biographies and writings concentrate on Villa the man, whereas Friedrich Katz is the first who is focusing on the movement instead, and many sources were unavailable to those earlier authors. I guess nobody will attempt to read this brick of a book cover to cover and people who expect some sort of a Western movie atmosphere, will be disappointed, although there are all the ingredients like spirited horsemen, sinewy cattle, rapid bursts of gunfire, murder, rape, and endless chases.Prof. Katz convincingly divides his book into four parts, representing four major phases both in Villa's life and in the history of Mexico. From his early life as the grim outlaw and his brief governorship of Chihuahua, to national leader, his attack on Columbus, NM, his decline and finally his assassination and its aftermath and the evolution of the Villa legend. The question remains if Villa did have a vision for Mexico and its place in international politics. The answer is uncertain, he certainly never had a wide-ranging program like the Plan de Ayala. But yes, if we consider his period as governor of Chihuahua.Villa's death was as violent as his life. On July 20, 1923 he was assassinated in the town of Canutillo and the author did some heroic research to identify the killers but all he can do is summing up several theories. Even Villa's body didn't find rest; three years after the assassination, robbers broke into his cave and stole his skull. This presents another mystery, who wanted Villa's skull? All kinds of rumors surfaced and the latest story was that it had been acquired by - who else - the Yale Skull and Bones fraternity. I guess they can live with that, they have also been accused of stealing the skull of Geronimo. The book has an exhaustive apparatus of some 170 pages including notes, sources, bibliography and index and is most helpful for anyone with a serious interest in Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution.

I found this to be a very exhaustive study of one of the most complex characters of the Western Hemisphere in this century. Frequently characterized in US books, television and movies and a besotted and clownish Mexican bandit, Villa was a charismatic revolutionary leader who commanded perhaps the most disciplined army of the Mexican Revolution, strove for social change to benefit the poor and the middle class of Mexico, and who proved to be one of the most "incorruptible" of the leaders of his time. At times brutal and savage, at others magnanimous, he was one of the few leaders of the revolution who refused to enrich himself at the expense of the poor of Mexico. Professor Katz has disclosed a man rarely glimpsed by the US reader, and done so with an even hand, reporting Villa's abuses as well as his triumphs. After a few months rest, I plan to read it again.

The history of Francisco Villa is full of questions in the Mexican Revolution History, for some he was a bandit and for others a great Hero, in this book full of studies and investigations, the reader can know who really Villa was in an easy and fascinating way. Is interesting how is described the relationship between Villa and Generals Carranza and Obregon, and how really it was based on truly facts, also the way to be of the nearest men of Villa. in the life of the General Villa something is inmeasurable and it is explained in the book: "The Man between the angel and the iron" (entre el angel y el fierro). With this phrase you can put Villa between General Fierro "El carnicero" and General Felipe Angeles "El artillero de la revolución" and the reader will find how unpredictible General Villa was,how unpredictible the decitions on him were. This book is a great legacy for the Mexican History students.

The Life and Times of Pancho Villa is truly a masterpiece of historical biography. This volume accomplishes a rare feat in current historical scholarship---an eminently readable book which provides an unparalleled scholarly contribution. Prof Katz, while portraying General Villa's critical role in Mexican history, weaves into his text a colorful depiction Villa's indomitable character. A pleasure to read, this book will remain a favorite of both scholars and fans of Mexican history for many years to come.

After reading the other reviews on amazon.com, my view as follows will clearly be in the minority. Nonethless, I think the other side of this book needs to be stated--it is way too long, far too detailed, and so loaded down with unnecessary background that I frankly lost sight of ol' Pancho. In frustration I turned to the Encyclopedia Britanica and in about ten minutes learned more about Villa and his times than I did in the first extremely dense 400 pages of Katz's book.It is because of overdone books like this that so many people today refuse to read history. If I could I'd like to get my $29 back!

This is a massive book, and not for light reading. Still, I think it is the best book on the Revolutionary period. If you are interested in this subject, this should not be the first book you pick up, there is just too much information. However, after you've read one or two other books, and have a good grounding, this is the book that wraps it up. There is nothing left out.
